Elaine Tingay’s Memorial “Living by the Sea” Scholarship
To honour a life dedicated to family, commitment to the education of the young and a love of living by the sea, in partnership with the Friends of the Marine Discover Centre, the Tingay family are extremely proud to create the Elaine Tingay Memorial “Living by the Sea” scholarship.
Elaine passed away in December 2008, only a few years into a new life in Point Lonsdale. Her family believe it is a fitting tribute to her life, to create a scholarship fund open to Point Lonsdale/Queenscliff grade 6 primary school students. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist a student to help develop their knowledge of the local marine environment.
About the scholarship
At the end of each year, grade 6 primary school students from the Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale area will be invited to apply for the scholarship.
Students will be able to submit either a written paper, story, painting, photograph or drawing (using their chosen type of technology) to describe what they would like the Point Lonsdale/Queenscliff area to be like when they grow up. Students will be asked to provide one idea as to what the local community could do to make sure their “future Point Lonsdale/Queenscliff” comes true.
Representatives from the Friends of the Marine Discovery Centre will act as judges for the scholarship. Submissions will be judged on the basis of the student’s vision for how people and the local marine environment can live together.
Each year one submission will be selected and will be awarded a cash scholarship of $300 and an annual membership to the Marine Discovery Centre.
About Elaine Tingay
Elaine lived the majority of her life in Bendigo, where she both raised a family and forged a successful career in education.
Elaine commenced her career in education as a primary school teacher in the mid 1960’s. Over the next 40 years, Elaine worked tirelessly to improve education standards in the north east region of Victoria, with a specific focus on disadvantaged children.
She retired a member of the Regional Senior Management Team in early 2006 and then shifted to become a “full time” resident of point Lonsdale.
The choice of Point Lonsdale was simple. Elaine and her family had been holidaying at Point Lonsdale over 30 years ago.
Her family connection actually started in the 1940’s when her father spent time at point Lonsdale recuperating from war time injuries. Her love for Point Lonsdale was probably only second to her family. Elaine is survived by her husband Stan and her own children’s families (eldest Steven, wife Sonia and children Declan and Cormac and youngest son Andrew, wife Mandy and children Archie and Frankie).
Elaine took every opportunity to spend time with her four grandchildren.
She was a significant part of their lives. Some of her happiest times were spent with her grandchildren (and friends of grandchildren) at either the Spring’s beach or the Point Lonsdale rock pools. When not spending time with grandchildren, Elaine and her husband travelled Australia and overseas.
It is in her memory and a tribute to the “loves” of her life, that her family has created the scholarship. Elaine was always a practical person who sought to a make difference and through the memorial scholarship it is hoped that she can continue to make a difference to the lives of young people.
